Our Mission
The Newport Art Museum was founded in 1912 on the belief that arts and culture have the power to bring diverse groups of individuals together, which ultimately promotes civic engagement and strengthens the social fabric of our communities. This core belief continues to guide our Museum’s direction today.
Our Museum’s mission is to share a diversity of art and experiences that spark reflection, inspiration, discovery, and connection within our Newport community and beyond.
Located on 3-acres along Bellevue Avenue, the Museum’s galleries are housed in two historically significant buildings: the John N.A. Griswold House (completed in 1864, by architect Richard Morris Hunt) and the Cushing Memorial Gallery (completed in 1920, by Delano & Aldrich Architects). Our galleries feature selections from our growing permanent collection, and notable special exhibitions, and showcase over 600 contemporary regional, national and international artists annually.
Art classes for all ages and experience levels are held in our Museum School studios, and our teaching artists provide arts education through our robust community outreach initiatives. Outdoor sculptures are installed throughout our campus, which is always open for all to enjoy.
Dynamic public programs seek to connect our exhibition content with the community. We prioritize the inclusion of diverse voices, recognizing that inclusive conversations enable rich, fair and relevant discourse, and uphold our vision as a community-minded arts organization and the nexus of artistic, intellectual, social, and cultural life in the region.

Art can challenge people to open their minds and make connections they did not see before, which has the potential to make our communities better places to live and work for everyone.
