Welcome, everyone, to Your Museum.

We are committed to championing diversity, equity, access and inclusion.

Internally this means building a more diverse and inclusive workplace and Boardroom reflective of our diverse audiences, participating in ongoing Diversity, Equity, Access and Inclusion (DEAI) and implicit bias work, and viewing all internal policies and procedures through an equity lens.

Outwardly it includes continuing to curate exhibitions with broad representation of ideas, identities and voices, and creating respectful and socially responsive programming in collaboration with community members.

It values expanding opportunities for individuals from under-represented groups to create, learn, teach, intern, work, visit, and thrive at the Museum. It means listening, creating opportunities for dialogue and fresh perspectives, and being a courageous ally.

We are committed to cultivating a culture of inclusion because the collective sum of the individual differences, life experiences, knowledge, innovation, self-expression, and talent that our staff, Board of Trustees and audiences bring together ensures the Museum is and will be a welcoming place for everyone.

Our Mission

The Newport Art Museum was founded in 1912 on the belief that arts and culture have the power to bring diverse groups of individuals together, which ultimately promotes civic engagement and strengthens the social fabric of our communities. This core belief continues to guide our Museum’s direction today.

Our Museum’s mission is to share a diversity of art and experiences that spark reflection, inspiration, discovery, and connection within our Newport community and beyond.

Located on 3-acres along Bellevue Avenue, the Museum’s galleries are housed in two historically significant buildings: the John N.A. Griswold House (completed in 1864, by architect Richard Morris Hunt) and the Cushing Memorial Gallery (completed in 1920, by Delano & Aldrich Architects). Our galleries feature selections from our growing permanent collection, and notable special exhibitions, and showcase over 600 contemporary regional, national and international artists annually.

Art classes for all ages and experience levels are held in our Museum School studios, and our teaching artists provide arts education through our robust community outreach initiatives. Outdoor sculptures are installed throughout our campus, which is always open for all to enjoy.

Dynamic public programs seek to connect our exhibition content with the community. We prioritize the inclusion of diverse voices, recognizing that inclusive conversations enable rich, fair and relevant discourse, and uphold our vision as a community-minded arts organization and the nexus of artistic, intellectual, social, and cultural life in the region.

Ultimately, our Museum is ABOUT you. When you participate, our mission is activated. When your voices are heard, our work is relevant. Art can challenge people to open their minds and make connections they did not see before, which has the potential to make our communities better places to live and work for everyone.

INSIGHT 2020: New Direction for a New Decade

These twenty-first century realities demand a profound rethinking of our priorities and operations. We must reconsider who we serve and how we achieve meaningful impact. Our new strategic action plan, INSIGHT 2020, takes into account the significant changes that have already occurred, strives to anticipate actions we will need to take in the near future, and creatively imagines modifications that might be required ten years from now.
