Summer Camps

Summer Youth Art Camps

 

Unless otherwise indicated, camps are held Monday through Friday from 9 am to 3 pm and one week tuition is $300 for Museum members and $345 for non-members.

Week 1 | July 2 - 6 (no camp July 4th)

 

Exploring Sculpture & Form
Ages 6 - 8

Using the Art Museum’s outdoor sculpture and the many specimen trees on its campus as inspiration, students explore various materials, textures, sculpting mediums, and creative methods to create a 3D piece. Finished sculptures will be positioned on and around the Art Museum’s grounds and photographed.

Stop Motion Animation
Ages 6 - 8

Students write, storyboard and build their own characters and set using clay, paper and other materials. And finally, shoot their scenes.

Young Explorers: Capturing Summer
Ages 9 - 12

Grab your cameras and get ready to trek through historic Newport like a group of photojournalists. Document your adventures and curate and install an exhibition or your work for public viewing on the final day of camp.

Architecture & Design
Ages 9 - 12

Using examples of architecture, design and natural surroundings in our community, students will create sketches for mini-dwellings. From complex tree house maquettes set in live branches scavenged from the area to futuristic habitats, discussions about what constitutes a home, what should it look like, who lives there, and functional design will take place during construction.

Week 2 | July 9 - 13

 

Mixed Media
​Ages 6 - 8

Projects emphasize skill building, arts and visual literacy, text and writing, and behavioral and emotional development. Subjects include landscapes, portraits or figures, observational artwork, and color mixing.  Students are invited to sign up for multiple weeks. Art projects vary week to week.

Where the Wild Artists Are
Ages 6 - 8

Animals and their habitats are the inspiration for this camp. Students design their own sketchbooks, select their favorite animals, and by using different mediums, create a colorful menagerie of wildlife.

Math, Art & Woodworking
Ages 9 - 12

Learn introductory woodworking techniques and make personalized objects with hand and power tools. Skills learned include project layout and cutting, basic joinery, sanding and finishing, all with a focus on safety and best practices.

Action: Sports PHotography
Ages 9 - 12

Learn to capture the action, motion and drama of baseball, tennis, basketball, and surfing. Visit and photograph one of the few Court Tennis courts in the United States. Short daily walking field trips included.

Build Your Art Portfolio (2 - 6 pm)
Ages 15 - 18

College reviewers stress that a range of skills, ideas and media demonstrated over a period of time is the one of the best ways to make a strong case for admission in a student art portfolio.  Spend time this summer building your portfolio for the best presentation, and have a head start going into the fall.  Camp topics will include observational drawing, composition, experimentation with media and surface qualities, proportion and perspective and digital representation.  This week will be a springboard to building the teen student's best art portfolio and enhancing their outlook for reviews and college applications.

Week 3 | July 16 - 20

 

Percussion Camp
Ages 6 - 8
Join us this summer at Percussion Camp to explore the world of percussion instruments and the fun of making music.  Design and create your own instruments such as drums, cymbals, triangles, tambourines and more. The camp will culminate with a percussion performance.

Collage Storytelling
Ages 6 - 8

The term “collage” is derived from the French “coller,” which is “to glue.” Students will work in collage and assemblage to create one-of-a-kind images. Examples of artists’ works using these techniques will be referenced.

Animated Short Films
Ages 9 - 12

This camp explores the process of stop motion animation from concept to completed short film. Students will use clay and other materials to build characters and sets, photograph them, and finally import their images into animation software for editing.

All Creatures, Large & Small
Ages 9 - 12

The animal kingdom has captured artists' imaginations since the cave painters! Depict creatures that walk on all four, fly, and swim in drawings and paintings. Realistic anatomical depiction and mastery of a range of art materials will be emphasized.

Vessels, Vases and Baskets
Ages 6 - 8

Magically turn clay, paper mache, wood strips, and fabric into uniquely beautiful containers while learning about different cultures in the process.

Get Your Game On: Design & Programming
Ages 9 - 12

Begin with some history of games, rules, and hands on construction of digital gaming. Learn to take visual ideas, mythical characters, and narratives and apply them to your own video games, using open-based software Scratch. Scratch is easy to use, free, and available online so that you can use it at home.

Picnic on Canvas: Cook Up a Masterpiece
Ages 9 - 12

Students will draw, paint, sculpt, and collage a range of tasty projects, inspired by such well-known artists as Wayne Thiebaud and Pierre-August Renoir. Cook up a masterpiece!

Pinhole Photography
Ages 9 - 12

Students learn about and construct their own pinhole cameras, load them with light sensitive paper to create a negative. Using basic paper developer, images will be scanned and loaded into Photoshop where the visual possibilities are limitless.

Fashion: Deconstruction, Sewing Techniques, Look Book & Runway Show
Ages 9 - 12

This is fashion week at the Art Museum. Young designers will deconstruct garments made from a variety of fabrics and through instruction on basic sewing and illustration techniques, create a Look Book and new designs ready for the final day’s Runway Show and Photos.

Week 6 | August 6 - 10

 

Collage Storytelling
Ages 6 - 8

The term “collage” is derived from the French “coller,” which is “to glue.” Students will work in collage, assemblage to create one-of-a-kind images. Examples of artworks from famous assemblage artists will be referenced.

Tea and Garden Party
Ages 6 - 8

Referencing the Japanese Tea Ceremony and “High Tea” tradition, students create a Tea Set (teapot, bowl and/or cups). Demonstrations, lessons in serving tea, a tea party, and art show, a la Kimonos, are all part of the week.

Wet Paint CAMP
Ages 9 - 12

Each student will complete a series of paintings as they experiment with a variety of mediums and materials. By the end of the week, everyone will have an entry ready for the Museum’s Wet Paint weekend auction!

Week 7 | August 13 - 17

 

Learning to See & Make
Ages 6 - 8

This camp fosters material exploration, visual literacy, and behavioral and emotional development. Skill building; learning, identifying, and creating through shapes, colors, forms, and lines; literacy and writing; and art forms including drawing, painting, collage/mixed media, sculpture, and printmaking are emphasized.

Masterpiece Theater with Revka Hovermale
Ages 9 - 12

Join us for Performing Art theatre Camp at the Museum. Students will learn theatre games, theatre terminology and techniques.  Then students will  create a script that will include acting, singing and movement.  Create their own scenery for a performance at the end of the camp week.

Screen Printing
Ages 9 - 12

After creating unique designs, students will learn to work with screens, inks and squeegees to produce images onto paper (posters,) textiles (t-shirts,) wood, and even glass.

Ages 6 - 8

The Art of Photography: From Tripod to Ink Jet Print
Ages 9 - 12

Venture into an exciting world of movement through time. Students learn the ABCs of camera function and foundations of composition, lighting and editing. This class moves from presentations in the art studio to shooting outdoors. A fine art ink jet print of each student’s favorite photo completes the week. Tripods will be supplied.
