YOUTH SUMMER CAMPS

JUNE 19 - 23

Stories on Stage | Callie Clarke

Ages 3 - 6

June 19 - 23, 9:30 - 11:30 AM

Members: $100 | Non-members: $115

Young actor/artists will read well-loved fairy tales and stories and be introduced to new authors (author study). Students will make the story come alive by using the voice, body and imagination. Students will “act out “the story for character development, comprehension and reflection and increase their artistic skills by playing theater games that include emotions, movement, and improvisation. Students will also increase their artistic skills by being introduced to theater terms (stage, props, costumes) and make their own minimal set and costumes by using paper and craft materials. Final theatre presentation for family, friends, and other campers will be on the last day of camp.

 

Digital Explorers | Dan McManus

Ages 6 - 9

Students in this class will get their walking shoes on to discover and explore Newport. Newport has so much to offer in  ora and fauna, architecture, culture and history. Students will walk daily from the Art Museum campus to the surrounding neighborhoods to take digital pictures of interest. Students will learn the technical and artistic aspects of digital photography.

 

Exploring Sculpture | Kyle Legerski & Nina Miglio 

Ages 8 - 12

June 19 - 23,  9 AM - 3 PM

Be inspired by great works of sculpture in the extensive collection of the Newport Art Museum. Explore different textures, different sculpting mediums and experimental meth- ods like creating a photographic sculpture through images. Each camper will create at least two sculptures.

 

Resurrecting Film

Ages 11 - 14

June 19 - 23,  9 AM - 3 PM

Members: $300 | Non members: $345

Students will have the opportunity to explore their own personal photographic vision and create a portfolio of original photographs. Students will learn and investigate a variety of photographic process, techniques and styles. While we will be using digital cameras and inkjet printing, the emphasis will be on traditional 35mm  lm photography.

 


JUNE 26 - 30

Storytime Camp I: Great Adventures | Danielle Debrule

Ages 3 - 6

June 26 - 30, 9:30 - 11:30 AM

Members: $100 | Non-members: $115

Students will spend the week reading and discussing adventure books, such as Where the Wild Things Are and How I Became A Pirate. Students will be read a fun story and then create an art project associated with each book. Using a variety of art media such as paint, watercolors, crayons, pencils, glue. The adventure is endless!

 

Tea in the Garden | Sherry Italiano

Ages 6 - 9

June 26 - 30, 9 AM - 3 PM

Students will look at the difference between “High Tea” and the Japanese Tea Ceremony. Students will fabricate our Tea Set (teapot, bowl and/or cups, tea box and serving platter) and will talk about how the teapot functions as well as the balance between the handle and the spout. At the end of the week, students will enjoy a tea party and an art show. We will use lots of demonstrations of the art of Tea, serving etc. We will borrow original Kimonos to include in our demonstration of the tea ceremony and discuss the beauty and  ow of the Japanese tradition.

 

Tween Photographers | Dan McManus

Summer is the beach, farmers market, cool green grass and more. Develop a portfolio of summer-themed photographs that represent your love of summertime. Camp includes daily  eld trips to  nd summer subjects. Learn to edit your photos in our iMac Computer Studio with award winning, photographer, Dan McManus.

 

Beginner Filmmaking | Stacy Johnson

Ages 11 - 14

June 26 - 30, 9 AM - 3 PM

Members: $300 | Non-members: $345 | Studio Fee: $30

Students will begin by imagining an original character. They will gain an understanding of basic camera framing and movement through hands-on  filming experience filming their character and will learn how to write short screenplays by creating a conversation between their character and another person. They will learn about framing dialogue by filming this conversation. Finally, they will learn storyboarding and will create a brief mock news story or documentary featuring their character. Students would complete a collection of short films, which will be screened on the last day.

Storytime Camp II: Look Up! | Danielle Debrule

Looking upwards to the sky, sun, moon, clouds. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs or How to Catch a Star, students will read sto- rybooks and also talk about the weather and then create associated artwork based around new vocabulary and fun facts about what you see when you look up! Watercolors, model magic clay, paints and more will be used to create a mobile at week’s end.

 

Where the Wild Artists Are | Lisa May Tobin

Ages 6 - 9

July 5 - 7, 9 AM - 3 PM

Each day the campers will create an artwork using a different medium with a focus on an animal they select to study and draw. They will also design a sketch book to work in. We will bring in actual preserved animals to observe up close! Our class will learn about the variety environments animals inhabit from books provided.

 

Photo-Motion | Dan McManus

July 5 - 7, 9 AM - 3 PM

Students will explore different ideas and ways to interpret movement and motion with their digital camera. Students will be introduced to different concepts and ways of thinking associated with image capture within the digital medium by demonstrations and the opportunity to take a variety of pictures to create a portfolio of images for presentation.

Jungle Camp | Danielle Debrule

Students will read and look at books about jungles while drawing jungle animals and their habitats. Jungle Art creations will include animal masks, hippo puppets, clay snakes and insects, jungle vine pasta necklaces, 3-D birds, prints and jungle journals, mural and more!

 

Build a House for Your Action Figure | Lisa May Tobin

Ages 6 - 9

Every Action Figure needs a home! Bring in Batman, Wonder Woman, Spiderman and build a cool space for your Action Figure to chill. Students will draw a house plan, look and read about unique homes, learn the process to build a stable, free standing structure and familiarize themselves with the tools to make these unique Action Figure dwellings.

 

Found Object Art | Dan McManus

Ages 8 - 12

July 10 - 14, 9 AM - 3 PM

Finders, keepers! Create art from the environment in 3D. Each day of camp will build upon the next to reveal a finished 3D art project on  nal camp day. Students will find interesting, unusual everyday objects as they explore the campus and local parks. Found object pieces will be woven into a unique, personal 3D art project.

 

Fashion Illustration | Catherine Carter

Ages 11 - 14

July 10 - 14, 10 AM - 2 PM

Students will learn to draw faces, the fashion figure, fabrics, fashion details and accessories in colored pencils and markers. We also cover fashion history and ethnic costumes as inspiration. Finished drawings of faces, shoes, and clothing designs.

Space, Astronauts and Planets! Playing with space toys and reading fiction and non-fiction books about space, students will create artful stars, moon and planets by week’s end using a variety of art mediums such as tissue paper, paint, recycled materials. Science experiments included.

 

Vessels, Vases and Baskets | Lisa May Tobin

Using clay, paper mache, wood strips, and cloth, the students will learn new skills and explore new ways to use familiar materials and create a variety of unique containers for their special trinkets. Students will learn and read about different cultures and their use of vessels, vases and baskets.

 

Action Sports Photography | Dan McManus

This camp is for sports enthusiasts. Camp includes walking  eld trips each day to the local parks and institutions to capture action and motion of baseball, tennis, basketball and sur ng. Learn the best way to capture the action with your digital camera. As a special treat, exhibiting artist Jason Evans will visit camp and there will be an opportunity to attend a Newport Gulls game.

 

Fashion and Film | Kyle Legerski & Nina Miglio

Do you have a passion for fashion and a love of film? Are costumes your favorite part of the movies? This camp is for you! Be inspired by some of the most memorable fashion in film and then spend the week creating your own amazing designs and accessories for your own mini-movies! This class mixes film viewing and discussion with design and creation. Bring your popcorn, get ready to sketch and leave camp feeling inspired.

 


JULY 24 - 28

Big Messy Art Camp | Danielle Debrule

Ages 3 - 6

July 24 - 28, 9:30 - 11:30 AM

Students will spend the week creating art projects using very messy and often “untraditional” materials. Students will experience a variety of tactile mediums and also use kinetic artistic techniques such as painting with rolling marbles and vibrating rubber bands. By the end of the week students will have an increased understanding that having messy fun is creating art.

 

Stop Motion Animation | Daniel Smith

Ages 6 - 9

July 24 - 28, 9 AM - 3 PM

Members: $300 | Non-members: $345 | Studio fee: $30

Students will write, storyboard and build their own characters and set using clay, paper and other materials. And finally, shoot their scenes! Stop Motion Animation is an intense process and detailed orientated, students will learn to manage their time to get the  lm complete. Each student will be responsible for their own stop motion  lm, spanning no less than 30 seconds.

 

Draw & Explore | Peter Dickison

Learn a series of five drawing skills. We’ll explore the Newport Art Museum neighborhood to search for observational drawing opportunities for each drawing tool. Use various graphic media, including graphite, charcoal, chalk, collage, and ink wash.

Collage lets you use your imagination to build a visual story from pre-existing images. In this camp you will collage in new and excit- ing ways. Using traditional and untraditional materials creative a creative  ow of collage projects that let you  nd your unique voice.

Over the course of the week students will become familiar with animals living in the ocean, including those living right here in Narragansett Bay! We will being reading and discussing ocean-themed books and learning more about what these creatures and their habitats look like. Daily art projects will use a variety of media centering around these creatures. Students will increase their vocabulary and be able to discuss ocean ecosystems.

 

 

2D Animation | Daniel Smith

Students will build and enhance their drawing skills and time management in this 2D Animation class. Creating an animated  lm is a detail-oriented process. The students will be introduced to new digital art software and pressure sensitive drawing tablets that will all be used to tell an original story from script to post production. Students will be responsible for their own 30+ second animated film.

 

Masterpiece Art | Mandy Howe

Learn about famous artists Leonardo Da Vinci, Pablo Picasso, Elizabeth Murray and others. In the context of their time, these artists created masterpieces that greatly influenced their contemporaries and the history of art. Drawing, sculpture, printmaking and painting will all be explored as we study the work of Native artists, Impressionist painters and contemporary environmental sculptors. Skills in all media will be developed and creativity encouraged.

 

 

The Artist & The Environment | Dan McManus

Each day students will take a walking  eld trip to a new site and create artwork that reflects that environment using only the materials available at that location. Discussions about famous artists who manipulate landscapes and locations will be a part of the camp day.

Student will learn the ancient of art of Batiking with a modern twist - crewel stitches and embellishment. Students will make a Batik scarf, bookmark and a beautiful, fabricated journal.

The Mini Museum | Makayla Corrigan

Spend a week inside the Museum and become a mini-Newport Art Museum expert. Projects will be inspired by the Griswold House, the Cushing Gallery, the artwork in the collection and more. During story time, we will read all about other famous Museums and Artists.

The students will spend the week outdoors photographing the best of Newport’s summer. Each day students will learn and be given instruction on basic camera functions (shutter, aperture, zoom lens, self timer) and then spend the day experimenting with shots. Photos will be edited in our iMac digital studio and students will build a professional quality portfolio.

 

WET PAINT! | Mandy Howe

Each student will complete a series of paintings using a variety of materials. By the end of the week, everyone will have completed a painting to exhibit in Wet Paint.

Fashionistas will learn the mechanics of tie-dying material and how to manipulate the fabric to create interesting wearable art. We will read about Asian and African cultures and their use of dyes and paints in making clothes. We will celebrate our wonderful creations with an end of the week fashion show.

 

 

Young Architects

Ages 11 - 14

The goal of the camp is to inspire & educate students about their built environment while giving them a glimpse into our profession. Activities will include hand sketching, site visits to local prominent homes from traditional styles to modern, as well as an introduction to design software, model- making & a design assignment complete with a  nal presentation. It’s sure to be a good combination of education & expression as the students are exposed to multiple facets of Architecture & Design.

 


AUGUST 14 - 18 | Lisa May Tobin

Beautiful, Bewitching Biomes

Ages 6 - 9

August 14 - 18, 9 AM - 3 PM

Members: $300 | Non-members: $345

Students will creatively learn about the biomes. Explore a different ecosystem and make a journal with drawings of the plants and animals that inhabit it. The campers will learn the vocabulary unique to each habitat and the climate that is at the heart of each. Create each biome in a unique style using a variety of materials. One ecosystem may be represented as a diorama, another as a paint- ing, a clay rendering and paper mache too.

 

Pet Projects Imagination | Danielle Debrule

Students will spend the week exploring the process of artistic development, design, and construction by conceptualizing and developing their own “pet”. Students with a wild imagination will start by the constructing their “pet” by way of a design board, journal the “pets” origin, story, personality and behaviors, sculpt and paint the “pet” and build a 3D “pet” habitat using provided and found materials. Lastly, paint a portrait of their imagined “pet”.

 

The Art of Photography | Dan McManus

Students will learn the “ABC’s” of camera function and fundamentals, composition, lighting, editing, etc. By being in the studio and taking  eld trips along with computer presentations, students will begin to look at the world the way an artist does and express themselves through photography. Students will learn how all the elements work together to create fine art finished inkjet prints.
