McDonald Wright, Rhythm Flows in the Moment

May 18 – September 2, 2013     Wright Gallery

For McDonald Wright, photography is “painting with light.”  He uses the picture plane to embrace “the pulse, rhythm or visual syncopation inside the mimetic flow.” A graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design, Wright works to transcend the boundaries of photography and fine art, and despite the overwhelming prevalence of digital technology, film photography continues to be his chosen medium of expression.  In his photographs of water, jazz performers and street scenes, Wright experiments with the technology of the film camera, using small- and medium-format manual cameras, and partial frame advance to induce abstraction in his subject matter. This exhibition of work created over the last twenty years, includes black and white as well as color images, oil paintings and sculpture.
