One of the Newport Art Museum's most anticipated annual events, this exhibition highlights top talent from the region, bringing together an eclectic mix of art sourced from Rhode Island and beyond. Entries are open, calling established and emerging artists alike to submit their work for exposition and review. The resulting mix of art on display is always surprising and diverse, showcasing the varied interests and focus of our region's passionate artists.
This year marks the 30th Newport Annual Members’ Juried Exhibition. The Newport Art Museum is privileged to have Sarah Kennel, Byrne Family Curator of Photographs at the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, MA, as juror.
Prior to joining PEM in 2015, Dr. Kennel was an Associate Curator in the Department of Photographs at the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C., where she curated and contributed to a vast array of exhibitions for fifteen years. Some of her past exhibitions include “The Art of Romare Bearden,” “Irving Penn: The Platinum Prints,” “The Art of the Snapshot, 1888-1978: From the Collection of Robert E. Jackson,” “Charles Marville: Photographer of Paris,” “Garry Winogrand,” and “The Serial Portrait: Photography and Identity in the Last One Hundred Years.” In addition, she has curated interdisciplinary shows combining painting, photography, video, and textiles. She recently curated “Samuel F.B. Morse’s Gallery of the Louvre and the Art of Invention” at PEM, and, in 2018, she will open a major traveling show of photographer Sally Mann’s work entitled “Sally Mann: A Thousand Crossings,” which she jointly curated with the National Gallery of Art. Dr. Kennel earned her B.A. from Princeton University and a Ph.D. in art history at University of California, Berkeley.
Prizes will be awarded in painting, watercolor, prints/pastels/drawings, three-dimensional, photography/video, mixed media and “Best-in-Show.”
New this year! A student prize will also be awarded. To be eligible for the student prize, you must be a full-time student and bring a school ID or proof of enrollment with you to drop-off.
An Artist Talk with the Annual award winners will take place on Thursday, April 13 at 6 pm during Art After Dark, at the Museum, 76 Bellevue Avenue, Newport. The talk is free and Art After Dark is free or by donation.
