The history of beautiful and functional craft in Newport is legendary. Ralph Carpenter's 1954 book The Arts and Crafts of Newport highlighted colonial furniture. At the Art Association of Newport in 1928, artist and craftsman John Howard Benson organized an exhibition of Newport "Arts and Crafts," and indeed in our exhibition catalogues of the time one could view ads by many of Newport's thriving craft industries. This winter, representatives of some of today's exquisite craft industries from the Aquidneck Island region will display their work in the Museum's Studio Gallery. The group will include furniture by George Warren, jewelry by Ruth Brandt and Tamar Kern, baskets by Helen Lee, rugs by Ron Caplain, and stone carving by Brooke Roberts and Nick Benson.
