Its Wet Paint Weekend!

It’s time to get the whole family involved in the biggest community art-making experience of the summer! Join in the fun of Wet Paint - a marquee philanthropic event in Newport! Spend Saturday painting en plein air (outside!) and donate your painting to the Museum for the Silent Auction Saturday night and Sunday. All ages and abilities are welcome to participate.

How it works:

Youth registration begins at the Museum at 10 am on Saturday. Each youth will be provided with a canvas and a list of great outdoor locations to explore and paint. Bring your own art supplies - pencil, pen, pastel, paint, collage - it’s all good! Whisk your masterpiece back to the Museum Saturday afternoon and we’ll install it! Then join us for the Opening Reception on Saturday evening!

It’s free to submit a work of art, and artists receive free admission to the Opening Reception for themselves and a guest!

The Wet Paint Second Saturday activity is free, and will not involve a Guided Close Looking Tour.

Each Second Saturday activity is free with paid Museum admission.

(Members and children under 5 always free.)

The Whale Guitar Project - Saving Whales Through Song!

The ‘Whale Guitar” is traveling to the Newport Art Museum for Second Saturday! Bring all those artful, creative kids, musicians, artists, and whale lovers, too! The Whale Guitar was created by musician and activist Jen Long, to raise awareness of the plight of whales, and raise funds to protect them and their ocean home. Inspired by Herman Melville's great book "The Whale" (Moby Dick), the Whale Guitar is a sonic work of art that sings for whales in the hands of whale-loving guitarists! Through this experience she seeks to inspire support for Ocean Alliance, a nonprofit dedicated to the conservation of whales and their marine environment.  Appropriate since Ocean Alliance scientists are the ones that discovered whales sing!

Come hear more about the plight of whales and see this one-of-a-kind, American crafted, Melville-inspired, Whale Guitar up close!

“This is a piece of American craft and folk art, but it is an instrument, too — it sounds and feels good, people are surprised,” Long said.

Each Second Saturday activity is free with paid Museum admission.
