A Collaborative Art & Literary Experience
Redwood Library & Athenaeum and Newport Art Museum
This brand new collaborative guided tour experience is appropriate for school and youth groups of all ages. These interactive, dialogue-driven tours focus on English Language Arts and Visual Art Literacy skills, using the Museum's and Athenaeum's extensive permanent collections as resources. Programs are specifically tailored to meet your curricular needs and carefully blend art, literacy, history, cultural context, architecture, and visual literacy into engaging visits that are aligned with national Common Core Standards.
Learning to Look & Treasures from the Vault
The Museum’s “Learning to Look” gallery talks enhance learning and help students hone their observational skills and strengthen their ability to empathize, analyze, reason and intuit. The Redwood Library & Athenaeum “Treasures from the Vault” brings rarely seen historic books, illuminated manuscripts, and literature to life.
Museum and Athenaeum Educators work closely with teachers to tailor tour topics to expand upon particular areas of the school curriculum or specific classroom/group projects. Groups spend equal time between both institutions, and includes a brief history before delving into close observation and thoughtful dialogue around a small number of specially selected objects and works of art. Our goal is to encourage students to examine carefully, express their impressions descriptively, and enjoy artistic and literary discovery.
Language of Art Guided tours last approximately two hours and thirty minutes (includes check-in, orientations, and 1 hour tours in each institution.)
