Our Guided tours are an interactive blend of art, history, cultural context, architecture, and visual literacy, ensuring an unforgettable Museum experience. Explore the architecture of our historic buildings, learn more about the social and historical context of the permanent collection, hear about the visionary women who were the force behind the Newport Art Association, and gain insight into artists' motivation, messages and techniques in our changing exhibits. We take an interactive approach to learning and tours can be arranged for any group size and age.
- An exhibit in itself, the John N.A. Griswold House was famed architect Richard Morris Hunt’s first commission in Newport, completed in 1864, long before he designed Marble House and the Breakers. Now unofficially termed “Stick Style”, this summer cottage is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
- Pulitzer prize winning author Maud Howe Elliott, sculptor and philanthropist Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney and painter Helena Sturtevant were among the visionary leaders of the fledgling Art Association of Newport, who bought the John N. A. Griswold House in 1915 for its headquarters to mount exhibitions, host lectures, and lead art classes.
- The Newport Art Museum, a collecting institution fully accredited by the American Alliance of Museums, features an extensive permanent collection that spans more than 300 years and over 2500 objects that includes works by Bannister, Bellows, Lane, and Richards, alongside multiple ever-changing contemporary visual art exhibitions.
- The Museum’s Coleman Center for Creative Studies continues the Art Association of Newport’s educational legacy and offers a full range of classes and workshops for adults and youth in its studios year-round.
The Museum’s goal is to encourage guests to examine carefully, express their impressions descriptively, and enjoy artistic discovery.
