Matisse was known for his extraordinary use of color. First identified as a Fauve artist, he expanded his artistic vision and became one of the most seminal painters in the development of modern art. Japanese aesthetics are often profoundly different from those of the Modern West. Some works such as Samurai swords and silks are well known and greatly appreciated in the West. Other media such as bamboo carvings are less recognized yet of great interest. This illustrated slide lecture will focus on the representation of Japanese aesthetics, using valued works as well as more mundane objects to exemplify some of the foundations for the Japanese concept of beauty.

The White Line or Provincetown Print

The White Line or Provincetown Print began in 1915 by a group of Provincetown artists who were devoted to the re-invention and simplification of the Japanese woodblock print process. This print is made with a block of wood, a knife, a spoon and watercolor paints. The White Line Print process has been taught by artists for generations. This one-day workshop will take you through the process of design, carving and printing, to complete a finished White Line Print.
