History

The Library

The Newport Art Museum and Art Association is America’s oldest known surviving art association, having been established in 1912.  Today, the legacy of the founding artists is a three-building campus and community cultural center that provides the region with high quality exhibitions, an art school, educational programs and events.

The Museum’s John N.A. Griswold House, designed by Richard Morris Hunt and built in 1864, is a National Historic Landmark and represents a key era in American history.  John Alsop Griswold, his wife Jane Emmet Griswold and their five children summered here in Newport, maintaining their full time residence in New York City.  The Griswold House was one of the first “summer cottages” designed by Hunt.  Among his other works in Newport are The Breakers, Marble House and Ochre Court. The Museum’s Cushing Gallery was designed by William Adams Delano and built in 1920 in honor of artist Howard Gardiner Cushing.
