Changes on the Board of Trustees

The Newport Art Museum’s community of artists, members, staff and volunteers wants to express its heartfelt appreciation to former Trustees Jacalyn Egan and Robert Manice for their generosity to the Museum. Jackie joined the Board in 2002 and served as Vice President of the Board (and on its Executive Committee,) Co-Chair of the Development Committee and as a member of the Collections and Exhibitions Committee. Robert joined the Board in 2001 and served as Senior Vice President of the Board (and on its Executive Committee,) Chair of the Collections and Exhibitions Committee, Co-Chair of the 2008 Annual Fund, and as a member of the Building and Grounds and Governance Committees. Life-long philanthropists, Robert and Jackie and their spouses Heidi and Bill have devoted their time, talent and treasure to enriching the lives of others. We thank them for their leadership and commitment.

Invaluable Interns

2009 Interns, Laura and Vienna

Every week college students are busy at the Newport Art Museum meeting with staff, writing press releases, working on data bases, conducting research and more as they learn what it’s like to work in a real museum.

Every hour a student intern spends with us helps to keep the Museum running smoothly. We simply could not get everything done without them. Interns do a lot of legwork – clerical tasks, data management – but talented students have opportunities to do much more. Laura Butkus, a graduate of Connecticut College, interned with us in 2008 and 2009, and returned this fall to volunteer her time. Laura admits she “did a lot of paper pushing at first.” But her responsibilities increased with time and in 2008, she served as the in-house coordinator for Wet Paint. “The Museum trusted me to take on a lot of responsibility. It gave me a whole new sense of confidence. It was great job experience,” says Laura.

Vienna Maglio, a senior at Salve Regina University, came on board as an intern in September 2009 and will be with us until the spring. Some of the articles about the Museum you’ll see this year in newspapers and online will come from Vienna’s desk. “I’m applying what I’ve learned in the classroom about publicity and journalism,” says Vienna. “I wanted to intern in a non-profit. The Museum is a good fit for me and learning more about art is definitely a bonus.”

We are so grateful to all our interns! Thank you for your hard work.

Art for Soup

During the cold winter months, there is nothing more comforting than a bowl of hot soup. Starting in January, you can help feed hungry families in Rhode Island by bringing cans of soup to the Newport Art Museum. Whether you are attending the Winter Lecture Series or stopping by to see our latest exhibition, we hope that you will participate in Art for Soup. We will be working with the Rhode Island Community Food Bank to ensure that the soup is distributed to our most needy neighbors.
